RIVER SUMMARY DESCRIPTION: The National Wild and Scenic-designated (1992) Black River rises within wetlands along the Michigan Wisconsin border and flows through Gogebic County MI into Lake Superior. After tranquil beginnings, the Black River flows at an often precipitous pace over rapids and waterfalls such as Narrows, Chippewa, and Algonquin, Great Conglomerate, Potawatomi, Gorge, Sandstone and Rainbow. Between Copper Peak and Lake Superior - a distance of about two miles (3.2 km) - the Black River cascades 200 feet (61 m) over five cataracts which are up to 45 feet high; the "American Whitewater Association" rates this river section class 4-5+ - which expert whitewater paddler's consider one of the most difficult and dangerous stretches of whitewater within the Midwest USA !
