The Gail River flows at a generally class 3 pace and sometimes more difficult (4) through Untertilliach, St. Lorsezen, Birnbaum, and Kotschach Mauthen, before it eases to class 2 downriver of Kotschach Mauthen. On the 27 August 1987, Bob Obst kayaked this at first clear blue green and later milky green river between Obertilliach (bridge over Gail River 3.9 KM or 2.42 MI downriver of Obertilliach) and Birnbaum (bridge 1.2 KM or 0.75 mi downriver of Birnbaum); Bob Obst kayaked this 25.4 KM or 15.78 MI stretch of almost conttinuous whitewater in approximately 2 hours 37 minutes after bicycling my river shuttle.
