Exploring the Colorado River within Grand Canyon National Park
http://www.nps.gov/grca/index.htm was a magnificent experience. During September of 1983 - during a trip organized by the Nantahala Outdoor Center
http://www.noc.com/ - Bob Obst canoed through most of the Grand Canyon - with the exception of Crystal Rapids - with his tandem, decked canoe partner Dr. Colleen E. Hayes. Bob's father - Robert J. Obst - was on a raft. During September 1983 water flow through the "Grand Canyon" ranged 25-30,000 CFS during our entire 3 week adventure. NOTE: During the Summer of 1983, water flow through the Grand Canyon was at record highs - ranging 25,000 to 92,600 CFS with the 92,600 CFS peak occurring on 6/29/1983. Some rapids - such as Crystal Rapids and Lava Falls - were rated class 4+ on a six point (international) scale. Although not as difficult as other rivers Bob has paddled, the Grand Canyon - with its powerful rapids, unending spectacular vistas, amazing side-canyon hikes, and colorful inner gorges - was one of the most memorable.
